The Autumn Equinox brings light and dark back into balance, the second of the year's two equal-day markers, this time tipping toward darkness rather than light. It's traditionally a moment of gratitude and letting go, right as September also tends to bring a return to routine, deadlines, and full inboxes after summer.
That collision, a season asking you to release, while work asks you to ramp up is exactly what this month's practice is for.
Why Work Stress Doesn't Clock Off With You
Stress from work rarely stays at work. It shows up as a tight jaw during dinner, a racing mind at bedtime, or that specific low hum of tension that doesn't seem to belong to any one thought. That's your nervous system, still in "on" mode long after the laptop's closed.
A short reset at your desk or right after can interrupt that carry-over before it soaks into the rest of your evening.
The Desk-Break Reset
This works between meetings, after a difficult call, or whenever focus starts to fray:
*Keep a Small bowl at your desk or in a drawer, visible enough to remember, discreet enough not to feel out of place
*When you notice tension building, pause for sixty seconds
*Strike the bowl once, quietly
*Close your eyes if you can, or simply soften your gaze
*Let the tone fade completely before returning to your screen
*Take one slow breath afterward, exhaling for longer than you inhaled
Sixty seconds isn't long enough to derail a workday but it's long enough to shift your body out of low-grade fight-or-flight and back into something closer to steady.
An Equinox End-of-Day Ritual
To mark the actual Equinox or any evening you want a clean break between "work you" and "home you":
*Sit somewhere just outside your workspace, a different chair, a different room, the front step
*Strike your bowl
*As the sound fades, mentally name the day as finished out loud if you're alone, silently if not
*Let there be a genuine pause before moving into the rest of your evening
This isn't about pretending work stress doesn't exist. It's about giving yourself an actual boundary between one state and the next, rather than carrying the day's tension straight into the evening by default.
Balance, Not Burnout
The Equinox is a reminder that balance isn't something you arrive at once and keep it's something you return to, deliberately, again and again as the seasons (and deadlines) shift. A short sound ritual is a small, repeatable way to practise that return.
Our Tibetan singing bowl is built for exactly this kind of transition, the tier most people reach for when marking the line between "work" and "not work."
